Unit 2: Positions through triangulating 2 — Week 2

During these days, I made significant progress in my writing and studio work. Engaging in a dialogue with Manuel Lima’s Information Visualization Manifesto, I began to reorient my work, critically thinking from the perspective of the audience. Bell Hooks’ discussion and praise of critical thinking in Teaching Critical Thinking: Practical Wisdom also prompted me to consider these questions: What do the audience not know? What issues have I discovered? How can I effectively convey them?

With these questions in mind, I meticulously searched for authentic information on the relationship between asthma patients in London and air pollution on authoritative websites such as the Office for National Statistics and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. Faced with complex data, I carefully curated and extracted the most relevant data. My position was to use information visualization to illustrate the relationship between asthma patients in London and air pollution, raising awareness about the severity of asthma and promoting lung health advocacy to secure clean air.

Information Visualization

Leveraging my learning of Tableau, I carefully processed various types of data to create clear and meaningful visualizations while ensuring that I did not introduce unnecessary noise into the data stream. Ultimately, I incorporated aesthetics into my work. Based on the information visualization results, it was revealed that Bromley, Croydon, and Barnet were the three boroughs most severely affected, with Bromley having the highest levels of air pollution and asthma-related fatalities. This discovery piqued my curiosity and questions that I will continue to explore.

Plan of my work:
Based on the information visualization of my work and the feedback received, Bromley stands out as the London borough with the highest levels of air pollution and asthma-related fatalities. Consequently, I intend to undertake an in-depth field study in Bromley, utilizing illustrations, drawings, and interviews to comprehensively document and observe the correlation between air pollution and asthma patients in the area…
