Actually I don’t think my last week’s experiments were ideal, partly because I was too focused on completeness (result-oriented) and neglected the focus of the brief, and partly because there were not enough experiments. After the tutorial, I was surprised to find that I could think deeply from the “collection of mistakes”. Illustrator 3D is very nice and useful for individual fonts and icons, but cannot run large projects (which is why I decided to experiment based on the brief). Because of the limitations of the software, the “sketching of the animation” and the “running of the software” became an interesting contrast in a sense. Will the results be time-consuming, clumsy and easy?

What’s working well?
- This project explores the possibilities of going about testing stop-motion animation in a way that subverts Adobe Illustrator 3D. It has been explored in an open-ended way, evolving through numerous sketches, errors, renderings, and post-processing.
- The process of this project was very detailed and documented experimentation from nothing to something. The first week accurately remade the chosen work, increasing the understanding and use of Adobe Illustrator 3D effect. The second and third weeks gradually developed iterative experiments – using Illustrator 3D to test the possibilities of stop-motion animation. From the original complex and time consuming animations to simple and clear ones, it is clear that there has been a lot of exploration.
- This project is an interesting and rare form of 3D animation in a way that subverts Illustrator 3D. It explores and pushes the boundaries of the tool itself in a constant process of failure and advancement, thus testing whether the limitations imposed by the software can lead to some interesting and specific research.
What’s not working?
- The project is slightly unclear in terms of communicating its intentions, such as whether the focus of the research is ‘collection of mistakes’ or ‘the possibility of animating 3D models’. The intent of the study needs to be reflected in more iterative experiments.
- It is important to consider whether the final animation of the project reflects these intentions and how this limitation can be further exploited to create the argument.
To develop this further…
- This project could continue to delve into the iteration of ‘cute rabbits’, experimenting with more materials and textures using Illustrator 2023 based on the adobe website to give work variety.
- Starting with something super simple or typical and simplifying forms is a way to open up creative thinking.
